How can I get from Britain to Australia without taking an aeroplane?

I am planning to go to Australia and New Zealand (for starters!) in late January for as long as I can. I could get a flight but I really like the idea of getting there by land and sea (I have plenty of time). Is it actually possible though? Has anybody actually done this?! How?
